The Westonbirt 1st lacrosse team delivered a thrilling performance in the prestigious England Lacrosse School Challenge Cup, featuring the top eight schools in the country. Despite narrowly missing out on a semi-final spot, the girls demonstrated exceptional skill, resilience, and team spirit across three competitive matches.
In the opening game, Westonbirt faced St Swithun’s and made a statement with a commanding 7-3 victory. A scintillating first half saw the team race to a 4-0 lead, setting the tone for a dominant display. The defense held firm, and the attack finished clinically to secure the win in style.
Next up was St Catherine’s Bramley in a dramatic clash. Trailing 4-2 at halftime, Westonbirt roared back with an electrifying second-half performance, leveling the game at 5-5. The energy on the pitch was electric as the match headed into double-overtime golden goal. In a nail-biting conclusion, Westonbirt hit the post before St Cat’s edged the win with a goal ending the contest 6-5.
Despite the disappointment, Westonbirt rallied in the 5th place playoff against Queen Anne’s. The team showcased their attacking prowess, dominating the match with an impressive 11-7 victory. Their energy and determination capped off the day on a high note, securing a well-deserved top-five finish.
Ironically, St Swithun’s—defeated by Westonbirt in the opening round—reached the final, highlighting the fine margins in such a competitive tournament. However, Westonbirt can take immense pride in their performances, which were filled with grit, skill, and moments of brilliance.
The team left the field with smiles, knowing they had played some brilliant lacrosse. A hugely positive day and one to remember!
