Westonbirt's 1st lacrosse team delivered an outstanding performance at the Marlborough Invitational tournament, culminating in an impressive run to the final. The day began with a hard-fought 2-1 win over Downhouse, setting a determined tone for the rest of the tournament. The team then showcased their dominance with a 4-1 victory against Phoenix before securing another narrow 2-1 win over CLC that highlighted their resilience and composure in tight encounters. They built momentum with a commanding 6-2 win over Marlborough and wrapped up the group stage with a 3-1 triumph over Wycombe Abbey, earning their place in the final.
In the final, a clash of titans against Godolphin, Westonbirt battled with all their might. Despite their best efforts, the match ended in a 4-2 defeat. Throughout the day, standout performances in defence by Erin and Hannah provided a solid foundation, while the midfield trio of Sophie E, Taya D, and Ruby B controlled the games' pace and linked play effectively. Poppy M and Ella F displayed exceptional hustle, and Helo's skill at winning ground balls proved crucial in maintaining possession and momentum at key moments.
While the loss in the final is a disappointment, the team's performance throughout the tournament is a source of pride. Their focus now shifts to next week's National Championships, where they will look to build on this success and strive for even greater achievement.
